Community Service Project in SW 4010

Throughout this Fall 2023 semester thirteen students enrolled in Lee Ann Dalton's SW 4010: Social Work Practice with Groups class collectively decided to organize a food drive for their Chairtable Group Iniative Project.

For the project, they planned to arrange food for donation to those in need. One of the students even suggested designing shirts for the group to wear during the event to enhance unity and professionalism. Beyond just the food items, the students also compiled a list of community resources to distribute to those they served.

After much planning and strategizing, the agency they chose to collaborate with was the Crisis Help Center at the Hickory Salvation Army in Hickory, North Carolina. They planned a food drive that was held on November 4, 2023 with a goal of collecting enough food to create 26 bags for the drive. After contacting multiple sources for donations and various community outreach efforts, the drive ended with enough food for 75 bags to be distrubuted to those in need.

Thank you to our students and future social workers for putting together this project and helping the Hickory community!
